Antelope Valley College Theatre: Big Love

Auditions for “Big Love” to be held at college Antelope Valley College’s Theatre Arts Department will hold auditions for Charles Mee’s “Big Love” on Saturday, June 5 from 9-11a.m. and 2-4 p.m., and Sunday, June 6 from 2-4 p.m., in the AVC Black Box Theater, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.

Callbacks will be Sunday, June 6 from 6-8 p.m.

In a theatrical free-for-all, Charles Mee takes an ancient plot from Aeschylus’ “The Suppliant Women” and updates it into a vaudevillian tragicomedy.

As 50 brides rebel against their arranged marriages to 50 grooms, the ancient Greek tragedy themes of justice and revenge are combined with contemporary American themes of love, gender, marriage and murder.

The play examines the struggle to find a balance between equality and love amid an overload of sensory excess, pop songs, dance and physicality.

A variety of roles are available in this physically-driven piece, including those who can sing, dance, stand on their head and/or tell a good joke.

The full text of the play is available online at http://www.panix.com/userdirs/meejr/html/big_love.html.

Actors are asked to prepare a short (one minute) monologue from the script.

Performances of “Big Love” will be held at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 5 through Nov. 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21 in the AVC Black Box Theatre. For more information call 722-6300, ext 6728.
