And Currents Inbetween
And Currents Inbetween

Both Bruce McAllister’s larger works and intimate studies slip between the invisible boundaries dividing painting from drawing.  The painted mark and the drawn mark occur simultaneously, charging McAllister’s abstract works with a powerful and elusive force.  This meditation on the mark as it flows, splits, shatters, shifting from solid to liquid to powder, suggests a shifting existence.  Chandra Cerrito remarks, “The fact that most of his works suggest an enormous atmosphere, such as outer space, reflects McAllister’s pursuit of meaning beyond the perceptible, his efforts to grasp human existence as within the greater cosmos.”

Chandra Cerrito has recognized McAllister’s dialog with the history of abstraction, likening his “smudgy marks and expressive lines” to the grand gestures found in Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, and Antonio Tapies and comparing his elevation of drawing to Cy Twombly.

The Art Gallery is located at 3041 West Avenue K in building FA1, the Fine Arts Building, in the Fine Arts Quad on the west side of the Antelope College Valley Campus.
